Adult Learning Project

Orana Adult Learning (formerly Sutherland Shire Adult Leisure Learning Inc) was formed in September, 1985 by a group of ladies looking for a place where they could find friendship and learn different craft skills and at the same time they could talk and laugh with other people.

Since then our centre has grown and grown until now we offer classes over both Mondays and Wednesdays. Our volunteer tutors are very professional, some have won awards for their work, and they enjoy passing on their knowledge. We have many arts and craft classes, we also have exercise, dance, language, computer and history classes.

We have members ranging from young housewives to the retired, both men and women. Numbers vary from term to term but on average we usually have over two hundred members.

Our terms follow school term dates. Classes are generally of 1½ hours duration. First class 9 am to 10.30 am followed by 10.30 a.m to noon etc. Brochures are available with our time table.

Class Cancellation

From time to time due to sickness or unforeseen circumstances classes will be cancelled without notice. Where possible we will try to contact the affected students but make no assurance that this can be done in time. Also from time to time due to family commitments tutors may not be able to attend classes. Tutors will try and make arrangements with class members for these times. No refund of class costs will be made unless deemed by the committee that special circumstances are met.

The tutors are not paid but receive a small honorarium to offset their travel costs and the supplies used during their classes. They give of themselves freely and teach their classes with a sense that every person has the ability to learn and grow. We are thankful to have such a wonderful giving group of people and ask that you treat them with the kindness and the respect they deserve.

The project committee consists of a hard working group of people that are constantly looking to improve and manage the project. They quite often go above and beyond what is required of them and give their time freely, they are friendly and very approachable. Elected to these positions each year they maintain a very professional and vital part of the centre.
